» Historic Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhod

gurudwara-data-bandi-chhod   When visiting the famous Gwalior Fort, you cannot miss the sparkling white structure within the fort walls, the Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhod.

Built way back in the year 1970, the Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhod was constructed in memory of the celebrated release of Guru Hargobind Sahib, the sixth Sikh Guru. It is said that the Mughal Emperor Jehangir imprisoned the Guru in the Gwalior Fort & the Guru upon release managed to free 52 other prisoners (Kings). The Sikh today celebrate this day as the “Bandi Chhod Divas”.

Legends suggest that the original shrine bearing the name of Guru Hargobind Sahib was initially managed by Muslim priests unless it was taken over by the Sikhs who established the Gurudwara.

One can still find the original shrine near the entrance of the Gurudwara. The present building is a six-storey structure. An adjoining compound houses the Guru ka Langar that has residential rooms for pilgrims & staff & a vast dining hall.

Large numbers of pilgrims from across the country visit the Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhod to pay homage to Guru Hargobind Sahib. Since the celebrated return of the sixth Guru sometime in October 1619 coincides with the Hindu Diwali festival, the Sikh celebrate the Bandi Chhod Divas as their Diwali.
