| Named after Saint Gwaleepa, Gwalior is a popular city of Madhya Pradesh, India. Since, the city holds a glorious history, it is widely known as historic capital of central India. As per the vast history, Gwalior was initially called as Pourab. It is believed that Huns attacked Gwalior and captured the city in early 6th century BC. But later, during the reign of Kachawa Kings, Gwalior flourished. In 1232 AD, Parihars conquered Gwalior from Kachawas. Then in 1338 AD, the city again went into the hands of Tomar Rajputs. The year 1486 AD, when Tomar Raja Man Singh was crowned, is considered the beginning of golden age of Gwalior as this is the time when Gwalior became "the pearl in the necklace of the castles of Hind". Man Singh protected the city from many attackers like Sikander Lodhi of Delhi in 1505 AD but in 1516 AD, he died during Imbrahim Lodhi's siege. After Tomar Rajputs, Mughals got control over Gwalior and in 1754 after the fall of Mughals, Scindhia the Maratha took possession of Gwalior. Later in 1780, the British East India Co. came in picture and occupied Gwalior but Scindhia still remained the ruler due to their loyalty towards British. Hence, even after the independence, the Scindia family remained active in Indian politics. |
