jai-vilas-palace-museum   Introduction & History
Jai Vilas Palace of Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh was built in the year 1809, located in the new city of Gwalior. The palace was constructed to welcome the ‘Prince of Wales’ on his visit to the country. The magnificent white colored Jai Vilas Palace is an electric mix of contemporary style and traditional Indian motifs that creates a variable feast for the senses.

The palace, reminds the last rulers of Gwalior - the Scindias, although the current maharaja still lives in a portion of the palace, a large part of it is now a museum.

The palace was designed by Lt. Col. Sir Michael Filose and is a combination of the Tuscan and Corinthian architectural styles. Built by the Maharaja Jiyaji Rao Scindia, the palace is adorned with furniture from Versailles, ornate mirrors, Venetian cut glass swing, two Belgian chandeliers a huge dining table and an antique Rolls Royce.

Jai Vilas Palace Museum
Though the present Maharaja still lives in the palace, 35 of its rooms house the Scindia Museum, which displays royal memorabilia. The Museum boasts of a remarkable collection of artifacts, culled from all over the world. A crystal staircase winds its way up to the spectacular Durbar Hall. The arched ceiling, with stunning gold leaf work, carries two of the world’s largest and most magnificent chandeliers which are covered with 56 kilograms of gold.

One can witness some rare collections like a glass cradle from Italy, silver dinner services and swords that were once worn by Aurangzeb and Shah Jahan. The most enchanting curiosity in the palace is the famous model silver train that circulates brandy, dry fruit and cigars around the table after dinner.
