» Popular Tourist Attraction – The Man Mandir Palace, Gwalior

jai-vilas-palace-museum   Introduction & History

The Man Mandir Palace is a glorious palace which is situated inside the Gwalior Fort, which was built by Raja Man Singh of the Tomar dynasty between 1486 and 1516. The Man Mandir Palace can be reached by north eastern fort entrance.
This palace in particular is known as Chit Mandir or Painted Palace, just because of the richly embossed tiled and painted decorations with elephants and peacocks, and the exceptional mural with the ducks paddling in turquoise waters.

Design & Architecture

This Man Mandir Palace has four levels, two of them are underground. There are six rounded towers crowned with cupolas relieve this 80 feet high structure. The beauty of the palace is further enhanced by blue ceramic mosaic and petite trellis work. It consists of two open courts surrounded by apartments with carved stones, pillars.

Inside the Man Mandir Palace there are various rooms serving different purpose such as affairs of state, relaxation, decorated ornately with beautiful paintings, different figures of human beings, carved animals and flowers. The walls of these halls were decorated with triangular friezes. This is one of the few architecture marvels in the fort that has withstood the test of time.

Although the palace does not retain its former glory, traces of its flamboyant past can still be found here in its ruins. The tiles that were once used to embellish the exteriors are no longer there. The Jauhar pond that once sparkled like a jewel in a brass setting served as the burning grounds for the Rajput queens who would commit mass sati here after their kings had been vanquished in battle. The Man Mandir Palace is a testimony to the Rajput culture way back in the medieval era.
