Pawaya is the ruins of an ancient city which was earlier known as Padmavati. It is located around 68 km away from the city of Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. On the basis of archaeological evidence available at Pawaya it is believed that there must have been a beautiful Royal city.

The city evokes its historic charm through its ancient archaeological specimens that date back to 1st and 8th centuries. This ancient city attracts thousands of tourists from across the world and has stood as the major excursions from Gwalior.

There is mention of Padmavati in Vishnupuran where in the 3rd century Pawaya was the capital of the Naga kings. A life size statue of Chaksha Manibhadra dates back to 1 A D. The fort built by the Parmars, and the nearby Dhoomeshwar Mahadev temple are the main attractions.

The excavated Pawaya Temple is the best preserved temples of the region. The solid structure temple belongs to the Gupta period and the shrine is placed on the uppermost terrace. The temple consists of three terraces, of which the upper two terraces are decorated with ornate pilasters surmounted by a wall painting of chaitya-dormers. Pawaya also possesses coins belonging to the descendants of Skandnag, Vashunag, Bhimnag and Vrahaspatinag, some of the dynasties that ruled in the Vidisha-Gwalior region.
