» Ancient Teli ka Mandir, Gwalior

teli-ka-mandir-gwalior   A splendid architectural marvel, Teli ka Mandir is one of the most popular ancient temples of Gwalior. This Rajput temple located within the premises of the Gwalior Fort is a lofty structure towering to a height of about 100 feet, making it the tallest building within the confines of the fort.

Built way back in the 11th century, Teli ka Mandir is
dedicated to Lord Vishnu. What makes this temple unique from other temples is the perfect amalgamation of architectural styles of the Indo-Aryans & Dravidians.

While the roof of the temple exhibits distinguished Dravidian architecture, the add-on sculptures are distinctively Indo-Aryan. Several carved figurines like coiled serpents, a flying Garuda, figures of river goddesses & a chariot of Lord Vishnu adorn the exterior of the temple.

There are several theories that go behind the naming of the temple. According to one such theory, Rashtrakuta Govinda III after occupying the Gwalior Fort in 794 appointed Telang Brahmins to handle the rituals & religious ceremonies & that’s how the temple got its name. Another legend suggests that the temple is named so because of the Oil (Teli) merchants who constructed it. A third version suggests that the temple gets it name from Andhra Pradesh’s Telangana region that approves of the blend of Dravidian & Indo-Aryan architectural styles.

Whatever the truth, the Teli ka Mandir continues to stand as one of the most marvelous amalgams of architectural styles of South & North India. Reaching Teli ka Mandir is very easy with the local buses, taxis & autos plying regularly from the city of Gwalior.
