» Gwalior Tombs – A Well-Known Tourist Attraction

jai-vilas-palace-museum   Gwalior is famous for its historic monuments like the forts, palaces, museums and tombs. The Gwalior city holds two interesting Islamic monuments in the form of tombs. These are the graves of two most renowned personalities, the 16th century tomb of Mohammed Ghaus, who was a noble man and the other is the tomb of Tansen. Tansen was the famous singer from the court of Akbar.

Tomb of Mohammed Ghaus: The 16th century Mohammed Ghaus lies in the town of Hazira lures. An Afghan Prince who was later converted into a Sufi Saint. It was Ghaus Mohammed who had helped Babur to conquer the Gwalior Fort and according to a local legend he also granted a boon of a son to Tansen’s parents, hence the son was further venerated as Tansen. The mausoleum of Ghaus Mohammed is designed in typical Mughal style, is square shaped, with huge towers crowned by small domes. This tomb is a pilgrimage for both Hindus and Muslims.

Tomb of Tansen: Tansen is known as the father of Indian Classical Music. He was an exceptionally gifted vocalist and was also one of the Nine Jewels in the Emperor Akbar’s Court. Mia Tansen was discipline for some time to Swami Haridas and later Ghaus Mohammed was his spiritual leader. His tomb is near the tomb of Ghaus Mohammed and there is a tamarind tree near Tansen’s tomb which is believed to be as old as the mausoleum. This tomb was built in early Mughal architectural style. Mia Tansen’s tomb is part of Gwalior's living cultural heritage and is also the venue of a national scale music festival, held annually in November-December.
